Children learn sound recognition in elementary school, particularly kindergarten. Children are taught phonics to learn each letter's sound. Having a grasp of phonics is the precursor to reading for children, and many learn quicker if guided through fun exercises and games.

At The Classroom Store, we pride ourselves on offering teachers phonics education games and tools to facilitate learning. Our language arts teaching supplies collection has everything you need to strengthen students' testing skills and build early literacy.

Creative Phonics Games for Your Classroom

Reading and language skills set the foundation for a lifetime of success, which is why it's important to seek out ways to ensure your students are on solid ground from the start. One surefire method to help students build literacy skills is through phonics activities.

Check out these five fun phonics activities for preschoolers:

  1. Smack the letter: Preschools use a flyswatter to hit the letters you've written down on sticky notes. When you pronounce the letter's sound aloud, students must hit the appropriate letter, seeing who smacks it first.
  2. Say two words: Have your students sit on the floor. If you say two words with the same sound, they'll race to stand up as fast as they can. Students will remain seated if the words don't start with the same sound.
  3. Mystery bag: This simple game, which is best played in a gym, will keep your preschoolers active and engaged. Call out a letter and ask your students to respond with a word that starts with that letter. Then, throw a ball to your student, ask them to call out a letter for you and repeat the game.
  4. Letter sounds race: Position letter magnets opposite any magnetic surface, such as an easel, fridge or magnet board. When your students stand near your chosen magnetic surface, pronounce a letter sound, have them pick out the corresponding letter magnet and place it on the magnet board.
  5. Phonic photo scavenger hunt: Ask your preschoolers to create a digital or physical photo album with a photo of an item that corresponds to each letter sound. You can repeat this collage activity as students learn new sounds.
